As I was completing my journalism degree at Washington University the idea hit me that there was no full exploration into the rich history of American advertising. Most advertising courses and textbooks may devote a chapter or passing reference to the stories, approaches and legacies of great minds like Lasker, Hopkins, Calkins, Ogilvy, Bernbach, Clow (and so on). Determined to do something about it and share the advertising history I love, I researched, wrote, and sold-in the idea of teaching a full 16-week course. Thankfully, Wash U agreed and that was the beginning of my teaching experience.
I’ve always thought that teaching enhances my presentation skills and look forward to any opportunity to interact with students. In recent years, I had the honor of returning to Mizzou as Reich Visiting Professor for a Day in the College of Agriculture. It was humbling to be on the other side of the podium in classrooms where I once sat as an undergrad.
